Overview

Good job! By now, you are forming a picture in your mind of the challenge you will embrace in your humanitarian aid trip. In the module Resources, you reviewed Kleinman and

Benson’s approach to conducng a mini ethnography with every paent in the paper “Culture, Behavior, and Health.” Based on that resource, you will outline the populaon’s culture

(ethnography) affected by and surrounding your selected health challenge.

You sll haven’t directly interacted with any paents at the center of your chosen scenario. However, this approach can help you ancipate the culture the populaon will reflect.

Through invesgaon of the scholarly literature, you will be able to answer the quesons: What should you know about this populaon’s culture before you begin the trip? What

should you prepare to encounter? What cultural adaptaons will you need to blend the norms and expectaons of the populaon of your culture of origin and the culture of the

populaon of the chosen scenario?

Prompt

Building on the prior project preparaon assignments, conduct a “mini” ethnographic analysis of the specific populaon for your humanitarian aid trip. For this assignment, cra a short

paper substanated by scholarly literature.

Note that you should cite at least three scholarly sources from your invesgaon. The evidence should not be older than five years. To access the Shapiro Library Guide: Nursing—

Graduate, go to the Start Here secon of the course.

Specifically, you must address the following rubric criteria:

1. Ethnicity: Assess the ways in which ethnicity influences identy for the populaon. In other words, how does ethnicity factor into cultural concepons of identy?

2. Stakes: Analyze the stakes of the health issue for the paents and their loved ones.

3. Meaning of Illness: Describe how paents conceptualize illness in this populaon.

4. Social Stressors: Idenfy the social stresses paents may experience due to illness.

5. Impacts: Evaluate the potenal impacts of the clinical seng on your relaonship with the paent.

Guidelines for Submission

Your short paper must be a 2- to 3-page Word document, not including the tle page and references. It must be wrien in APA format. Use double spacing, 12-point Times New Roman

font, and one-inch margins. All references must be cited in APA format.

What is the first hygiene-related nursing diagnosis (problem and etiology) that comes to your mind for Mrs. Little?

You are caring for Mrs. Little, a 57-year-old woman who has been experiencing severe arthritic pain for the past 2 years. She rates her pain at an 8 or 9 on a 10-point pain-rating scale. During your assessment, you notice that Mrs. Little has a moderate body odor, long and untrimmed fingernails and toenails, oily hair, and unshaven legs and axillae. Mrs. Little readily admits that she has neglected her hygiene practices.

a.    What is the first hygiene-related nursing diagnosis (problem and etiology) that comes to your mind for Mrs. Little?

b.    What data do you have to support a diagnosis of Self-Care Deficit: Bathing? What data do you have to support an etiology of “immobility secondary to pain”?

c.     With the information in the scenario, how would you rate her Self-Care Deficit: mild, moderate, severe, or total?

d.    Anything you could do to help relieve Mrs. Little’s pain would facilitate her self-care abilities. However, to plan interventions in which you will assist with her hygiene care, what further patient data do you need?

e. Suppose you assess Mrs. Little further and determine that she has arthritis in multiple joints, including her hands, shoulders, back, knees, and feet. You also determine that she will need a complete bath, either tub or shower, but that she can brush her own teeth if someone provides the necessary supplies. Could you delegate her morning hygiene care to an experienced unlicensed assistive personnel (UAP)? If so, what instructions would you give the UAP?
