Analytical Essay
Final version (10-15 pages) due: May 7
Purpose
By completing this assignment, you will demonstrate your developing ability to research, analyze, and defend a reasoned position on an ethical issue in relation to health care, professionalism, and technology. You will also be asked to provide and defend a possible policy solution to the issue you address. Finally, you will demonstrate critical thinking skills by responding to fair-minded critic of the view you choose to defend.
To Do
Write a 10-15 page analytical essay which examines material from class readings and discussions in depth and defends a reasoned position on the relevant issues.
I. Introduction: set the context, provide your thesis statement
II. Literature Review: discuss what has been said by other thinkers, analyze these competing theories or perspectives to begin to work towards your reasoned viewpoint
III. Body: the heart of your analysis and argument in support of the thesis appears here
IV. Policy Response: now that you have enlightened the reader by clarifying the ethical, professional, and/or technological aspects of the problem, what should be done?
V. Objections and Replies: present and address an objection to your position
VI. Conclusion: restate thesis statement, highlight important aspects of your main argument, possibly end with a reflection on what you have accomplished
Your essay should constitute a balanced presentation which examines different sides of the issues you discuss while defending your reasoned viewpoint. Note that it is not possible to discuss every point brought up in the readings and discussion; an important part of the assignment is to exercise judgment as to what to include and what not to include in the essay.
Make sure that you include proper references to sources; these should appear on the last page. This should be a separate page. Use MLA style for the list of references.
