Foundations of Strategic Human Resource Management
This week we read George, Walker & Monster’s (2019) Meta-Analysis “Does Strategic Planning Improve Organizational Performance?” We also read in the Mello text about the value of human assets in business strategy. Based on this week’s readings, please answer the following questions. Answer them from a business lens (not just your own position) and consider HR’s role in business strategy.
1. Does your organization create value based on strategic planning/management? Consider how HR processes and policies, HR functions, and alignment serve business objectives. Where do you see value creation within your HR function, and based on the research, how does this impact organizational performance? If your organization does not create value based on strategic management, or if HR is not aligned with the overarching strategies, discuss how you would improve this within the business and/or HR function. (If you are not currently working in an HR department, think of an example from your previous work experience or a relevant company you have read about. Be specific with your examples.)
2. What business metrics might be used to monitor the success of these programs, at the organizational level and HR level?
3. Does your HR Department regularly refer to academic research when working to solve problems and create value? If yes, provide some examples and describe the impact. If no, how could you encourage this practice in the future? Be specific with examples of how HR research could be applied to specific problems or challenges being faced now.
