Your seminar paper
You are going to write a seminar paper over the course of this year. The final paper is due Sept. 1, 2023. You will choose the topic of your paper within the area of Applied Linguistics and develop this paper through the year, semester by semester. You will complete the paper independently over the summer, handing in the final paper by September 1, 2023. You will also be taking a course (with Lori) during the second semester, at the same time that you are taking my course, and in which you will be completing some of the writing required for your seminar paper. Lori and I are working together to help you to write up your research.
In the first semester, this course will introduce you to the topic of Applied Linguistics and the various topics within this field of study. During the first semester, you will complete three assignments, the first of which requires that you reflect on Applied Linguistics as it relates to your own language-learning experiences (due in Nov. 2022); the second introduces you to the content of the field via a researcher and his opinions and thought on this discipline (due in Dec. 2022), and the last of which requires that you choose and critique an academic article in Applied Linguistics (due in Jan. 2023). During the first semester, we will begin to write up research in academic English (based on a video), in the form of group work, during lessons. By the end of the semester break, you must have chosen a topic on which you will write your seminar paper. You are required to submit an informal account of your proposed seminar paper topic and ideas by the end of the semester break.
During the second semester, you will begin a unit of self-study on your topic, and writing up your research, some of this in class, while continuing to study about various aspects of Applied Linguistics as they relate to the topics of your papers. You may begin to collect data (on your own time), particularly if your research requires data to be collected within the academic school year. There are four assignments due during the second semester, most of which are a rough draft of a section of your final seminar paper. In March, you submit a proposal. Your introduction and References are due in April, the Literature Review and References in May, and the Methods and Procedures in June. During the semester, we will review the writing of each of these sections. In addition, we will go over how the remaining sections are formatted and written – how to collect data, methods to collect data, the analyses of data, the presentation of your research results, and your Discussion, Conclusions and final References sections.
