Case Study: Heinz Dilemma
In Europe, a woman was near death from a very bad disease. There was one drug that the doctors thought might save her–a form of radium that a druggist in the same town had recently discovered. The drug was expensive to make, but the druggist was charging ten times what the drug cost him to make. He paid $200 for the radium and charged $2,000 for a small dose of the drug. The sick woman’s husband, Heinz, went to everyone he knew to borrow the money, but he could get together only about $1,000, which was half of what it cost. He told the druggist that his wife was dying and asked him to sell it cheaper or let him pay later. But the druggist said, “No, I discovered the drug and I’m going to make money from it.” Heinz got desperate and broke into the man’s store to steal the drug for his wife.

You are allowed to choose from the following options for your final assignment:
1. Essay (1500 words max)
You will be evaluated on the basis of the following five categories.
1. Case presentation: Your case presentation should explain the ethical conflict in the
case, identify the stakeholders, and describe potential outcomes. An excellent case
presentation will make all ethically salient facts about the case clear.
2. Theory presentation: The presentation of your theory should identify and define key
terms as well as the overarching ethical position of the theorist. You should also indicate
why you chose to use this theory. A complete presentation of the theory will include
direct references to the text.
3. Theory application: Describe how the theory you chose would respond to the facts of
the case. Which core concept(s) from your theory are helpful for understanding the
ethical dimension or “wrong” in the case.
4. Case resolution: Use your theory to offer a resolution to this case. If your case is openended, explain what your theory would recommend. If the harm as already been done,
consider what your theory would say about how to “make it right” or prevent it from
happening again. Be sure to use references to the text to explain your reasoning. You
should also note anything your theory does not provide a clear resolution to in this
section.
5. Mechanics/ Style Presentation: This category assesses your organization, clarity, charity
and voice/ style. Grammar/spelling also are assessed in this category. Regardless of
whether you choose to write an essay or make a presentation, you should include your
sources. I do not have a preference for citation/ bibliography style so long as you are
consistent. You are allowed to choose from the following options for your final assignment:
