social media in italy vs america

*THIS PAPER MUST BE WRITTEN IN ITALIAN*

INSTRUCTIONS: Goal:

The goal of this assignment is to come to some insight regarding the commonalities and differences between Italian and American societies by doing some research on a specific topic that relates to both Italian and American societies and comparing the findings. Because of the limitations of time, it is recognized that the research must also be limited. Yet, it is hoped that the comparison yields at least the beginning of a new appreciation of Italian and American cultures.

Process:

Each student will select a topic from the ones listed below (or another of the student’s interest, with the approval of the professor).

The student will then do some general research on the theme, providing important statistical information that helps define the issue and the current trends relating to it, as well as the current laws [la legge] in the respective countries regarding the issue. National Italian sources of statistics should be consulted: Istat.it [N.B. This site is also available in English translation].

American sources can include https://www.usa.gov/statistics,

https://www.bls.gov, https://www.dol.gov/general/topic/statistics, among many others. There are many sites on the Internet that will allow you to get information in English on Italian laws.

3. The student will then find four short newspaper articles (2 each regarding America and Italy) published in the last year that illustrate a trend or cultural attitude regarding the issue. (The articles may be in English or Italian).

The trend may indicate a change from traditional or previous ideas or a continuation of the status quo. The articles on the same culture should illuminate different aspects of the issue.

Many short articles in Italian can be found in online Italian newspapers: La repubblica (www.repubblica.it), I/ corriere della sera (www.corrierelit). Some articles in English on Italian issues can be found in www.thelocal.it, www.osservatoreromano.va/en, or in the NY Times (www.nytimes.com) or Wall Street Journal (www.wsj.com), the latter two of which are available in the lona Library Database.

4. The student will write a report in which he or she defines the issue, summarizes these four articles in English, making sure to paraphrase (not copy) and to cite the source of the articles (give the web address). In the last part of the paper the student will consider as carefully as possible, recognizing the limits of the data, the implications of the articles and how they might suggest differences or commonalities between the U.S. and Italy regarding this theme.
