William Wells Brown’s Clotel
William Wells Brown’s Clotel
We know that literature typically mirrors the ideals of the people of the time in which it was written. In many cases, this literature serves as social commentary, literature that critiques aspects of society in order to highlight their flaws and hopefully prevent them from continuing. This can include cultural, political, or religious aspects of society. Clotel is an example of such.
It is said that “Clotel’s connection to Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence, is a comment on the incongruence of slavery in a nation built on the concept of personal freedom.”
“Incongruence of slavery” means that the events of the story do not align with the ideals expressed in the Declaration of Independence. Write an essay proving this statement.
